The Inca citadel of Machu Picchu was built around 1450 AD and is located high in the Andes Mountains near Cusco Peru. It is a major tourist attraction and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Getting There
The easiest way to get to Machu Picchu is to fly into Cusco, Peru. From there, take a bus to Aguas Calientes (hot springs) where you’ll find hotels and restaurants. You can then continue by foot to Machu Picchu.

How to Visit
There are two ways to visit Machu Picchu. One is to go via train, and the other is to hike. If you want to do the latter, you should start early in the morning. It’s best to have a guide if you’re going to hike.

What to See
You can either stay at the ruins or at a hotel outside of the park. If you stay inside the park, you’ll need to pay $60 per person. If you stay outside of the park, you’ll only need to pay $30 per person.

Where to Stay
If you choose to stay at the ruins, you can stay at one of the many hostels around Aguas Calientes. If you decide to stay outside of the park and not at the ruins, you’ll need to book a room in advance.

When to Go
It’s best to go between mid-April and October. In the summer months, it gets extremely hot and humid. However, it’s still possible to visit during these times.

Tips
Bring water shoes and sunscreen. Also bring a flashlight and mosquito repellent.

Machu Picchu is located at an altitude of 4200 meters above sea level. If you plan to visit Machu Picchu, make sure you have enough water and food supplies before you go. You should carry enough water to last you for two days, and bring snacks and some basic toiletries. Make sure you take plenty of sunscreen and wear hats and sunglasses. Bring comfortable walking shoes and layers of clothing.

When visiting Machu Picchu, try not to walk around the ruins after dark. There are many dangerous animals roaming the area, including snakes, scorpions, spiders, and bears. Also, keep in mind that the weather changes rapidly in Peru. Be prepared for rainstorms and high temperatures.

Machu Picchu does not allow photography inside the ruins. However, you may take photographs outside the ruins.

Machu Picchu tickets are sold online only. Tickets are non-refundable, and they cannot be exchanged.

Machu Picchu offers guided tours in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Portuguese, Dutch, and Arabic.

Machu Picchu’s ticket prices range between $80-$100 USD per person. Prices increase depending on how long you stay.
