How to become a great lawyer? How to get into law school? What should I study? These questions are common among students who want to pursue a career in law.

There are several ways to become a successful lawyer. The first step is to choose the right major. If you decide to go to law school, you’ll need to complete at least four years of undergraduate studies before applying to law schools.

For students to be eligible to practise law, they must meet the following requirements:

Pass the 12th grade exams with a 60% overall mark or a similar CGPA.
pass university- and national-level admission tests for the legal profession, such as CLAT and AILET

Obtain an LLB, BA LLB, BBA LLB, BSc LLB, or BCom LLB degree as an undergraduate or integrated legal degree.
Candidates with an LLM degree can practise law as well.

Be well-read
The first thing you need to do when you start practicing law is read. Read everything you can get your hands on about the law. You don’t have to go to law school to learn how to practice law; you just have to know what you’re doing. If you want to be a great attorney, you’ll have to read constantly.

Know the law
You should know the basic laws of each state before you even think about becoming a lawyer. Once you’ve learned the basics of the law, then you can move onto learning more advanced topics.

Practice
Practice makes perfect. When you’re starting out, you won’t have much experience. So, you’ll have to spend time studying and practicing. You’ll have to study the law and practice cases until you feel comfortable enough to handle them yourself.

Network
Networking is extremely important if you want to become a successful lawyer. Make sure to network with people who work in the field you want to enter. Ask questions and find out what they know.

Stay current
If you want to stay relevant in the legal world, you’ll have to keep up with the latest trends and news. Keep up with the latest technology and make sure to attend conferences and seminars.

Be honest
Being honest is the best way to succeed in any profession. Don’t lie or cheat to get ahead. Honesty is the only way to go.

Lawyer’s Duties


A lawyer’s primary duty is to provide legal services to his clients. A lawyer may also represent individuals who have been charged with criminal offenses. Lawyers may also assist businesses with contracts and business transactions.

Role of a Lawyer

An immigration attorney represents immigrants before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and advises them about their immigration status. A personal injury lawyer works with clients who have suffered injuries due to someone else’s negligence.

Earning Potential


Lawyers’ earnings vary based on factors such as their experience, education level, location, and the size of the firm they work for. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, attorneys earned a mean hourly wage of $66.90 in May 2015. The highest-paid 10 percent of lawyers earned over $109 per hour, while the lowest-paid 10 percent earned less than $45 per hour.
